Sharing our publication on this matter, showing that about 2/3rds of ovarian cystadenomas and/or cystadenofibromas can be expected to show some growth if followed over 2 years (with about 3/4ths of those doubling in volume in less than 3 years, and about 1/4th of those doubling in volume between 3-5 years)… BUT about 1/4th of these “tumors” have growth rates that are so slow or actually no growth that they would not be recognized as enlarging on a 2 year follow-up study.
The practical implication is that the SRU consensus statement on simple or nearly-simple adnexal cysts works well in designating a simple cyst that hasn’t demonstrably enlarged in 2 years as either a non-neoplastic cyst or an indolent cystadenoma/cystadenofibroma, and that routine further imaging follow-up of these cysts is not of clinical benefit. Patients and providers can decide if they want to periodically check on the size of the cyst on long term follow-up, but in the absence of any meaningful symptoms, this is of doubtful clinical benefit.
